WINEMAKER - Claus Preisinger

ABOUT THE WINEMAKER

“ Theory is not my way. Doing is what counts.” – Claus Preisinger

If you want to produce delicious Austrian red wine, you gotta have Gols. Vineyards located in and around the town of Gols are making a name for producing world class wines from Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent and, in the case of Preisinger, Pinot Noir. Close in proximity to Neusiedlersee, a vast, shallow salt lake that contributes climactically to the area’s beneficial conditions for red varieties, Neusiedlersee’s temperature regulating effects combine with the Pannonian climate conditions to provide warm, dry summers and cool winters optimal for wine growing. Taught to farm by his father, Lorenz, Claus adheres to more traditional techniques, incorporating hand tractors and hand harvesting in his work. Claus is a biodynamic farmer and describes himself as a “low-tech, instinctive, natural” kind of winemaker who “takes whatever the grapes bring and puts it right into the bottle.” His wines show a clear sense of place, intensity of fruit, and authenticity that only evolves from great farming. A member of the Gols Pannobile association, Claus is a champion of local grape varieties including Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch. He is the proud owner of a new winery, finished in the winter of 2009 that allows him more flexibility and room to create.
