Les Heretiques by Château d'Oupia, 2024

Always alluring, captivating and friendly, this wine has been a go-to for us since opening in 2016. Les Heretiques is a nod to the Cathars, a heretical Christian group once based in the Languedoc but wiped out by order of Pope Innocent III in 1208. It is bright and juicy with blackberries, purple flowers and cedar notes; the palate is fresh, dark and balanced with black raspberry and touches of cassis and anise. Marie-Pierre Iché runs Château d'Oupia, named after a medieval castle. The Carignan & Cinsault go through full carbonic maceration while the Grenache & Syrah are vinified in concrete. 30-year old vines.

100% Carignon (breaking the rules in Minervois - since Carignon must be blended to have the designation "Minervois" - hence, the "Heretiques"). This one has lovely fruit and earth.
Languedoc-Rousillon, France

Robert Parker has consistently praised this estate and rated the wine a “best buy.” He wrote:

“Château d'Oupia has produced the ideal bistro wine. Dark, ruby-colored, the wine is wonderfully clean and pure, with an exuberant personality, and gobs of rich, peppery, red and black fruit...Bravo to proprietor André Iché!”

André passed away in late 2007. His daugher, Marie-Pierre, currently runs the estate. She's been working with oenologist Laurent Batlle since 2008, who continues to make the wine -in his own words- "André's way."
